Oura Ring 5 is here, which means a lot of people are asking the same question:
Should I upgrade?
That is a fair question. New health tech is always tempting, especially when it promises better comfort, better battery life, better durability, or smarter insights. But after spending 365 days with Oura Ring 4, we think there is a better question to ask first.
Will the upgrade actually change your health behavior?
Because if the answer is no, then the newest ring may be exciting, but it may not be the biggest upgrade available to you.
We talk through our full Oura Ring 5 upgrade decision in the video, including what a year with Ring 4 taught us and whether we would personally make the switch. But before you watch that, here are three questions worth asking before upgrading any wearable.
1. Is Your Current Device Actually Getting in the Way?
This is the most practical place to start.
Is your current ring uncomfortable? Does it bother you at night? Is the battery frustrating? Is it scratched up enough that you notice it every day? Does it get in the way during workouts, lifting, sleep, or daily life?
Those things matter.
A wearable only works if you actually wear it. If the device is uncomfortable or annoying, you are less likely to keep it on. And if you do not keep it on, you lose the consistency that makes the data useful in the first place.
That is where a hardware upgrade can make sense. Better comfort, better battery life, or better durability can remove friction. And removing friction is a big deal when you are trying to build better habits.
But if your current device is still comfortable, still reliable, and still giving you useful information, then the upgrade question gets more complicated.
That is where the second question comes in.
2. Will the New Features Change What You Do?
This is where most health tech purchases get tricky.
New features sound exciting, but the real value is not the feature itself. The value is whether that feature helps you make a better decision.
Does it help you sleep earlier?
Does it help you recover more intelligently?
Does it help you notice stress before it becomes burnout?
Does it help you train smarter?
Does it help you stop ignoring a pattern you need to address?
If the new feature only gives you more data, but that data does not change your behavior, then it may not move your health forward very much.
This was one of the biggest lessons we learned after a full year with Oura Ring 4. At first, it was easy to get emotionally attached to the daily scores. A high score felt like success. A low score felt like failure.
But over time, the scores became less important than the repeated patterns.
That shift matters.
Because a wearable is not there to tell you whether you are a good or bad student. It is there to help you notice what your body keeps trying to tell you.
3. Are You Chasing a Tool Upgrade or a Habit Upgrade?
This is the longevity question.
Sometimes buying the newer tool feels like progress. And sometimes it is. But sometimes the real upgrade is not the device.
It is the habit.
A ring can show you that your sleep is inconsistent, but it cannot put you to bed.
It can show you that recovery is trending down, but it cannot force you to slow down.
It can show you stress patterns, but it cannot build boundaries for you.
It can reflect your choices, but it cannot make those choices for you.
That does not make wearables useless. Actually, it is the opposite. A good wearable can be incredibly helpful because it gives you feedback. It helps you see the invisible. It can turn sleep, stress, recovery, and consistency into something you can track over time.
But the data only matters if it leads somewhere.
That is why the Oura Ring 5 upgrade question is bigger than specs.
It is not just, “Is Ring 5 better than Ring 4?”
It is, “Would Ring 5 help us become more consistent with the health investments we are already trying to make?”
That is the question we unpack in the full video.
After 365 days with Oura Ring 4, we had a much clearer sense of what mattered, what did not, which numbers fooled us at first, and what kind of upgrade would actually make a difference.
