Celebrate Like a Caveman: Finding Joy in the Everyday

When Was the Last Time You Celebrated?

Take a moment to think about it. Was it a birthday, an anniversary, or maybe a national holiday? Perhaps it was a wedding or a promotion. These are the significant events we often circle or star on our calendars, eagerly awaiting their arrival. Many of these celebrations repeat year after year, providing us with familiar milestones to honor.

But what about the smaller moments? The daily victories and achievements that go unnoticed? A dear friend recently pointed out something profound: we don’t celebrate nearly as often as our ancestors did or as much as we should. This realization sparked a conversation that has since transformed how I view life.

Celebration in the Past

Imagine life back in the caveman days. Celebrations weren’t reserved for grand events but were a daily occurrence. Fresh water was a reason to rejoice. Successfully hunting and gathering meat and berries brought joy to the entire village. Every harvest and every new skill learned was met with communal cheer and gratitude.

Our ancestors understood something we’ve largely forgotten: life itself is worth celebrating. Every small win, every act of survival, and every moment of connection was an opportunity to express gratitude and joy.

The Case for More Celebrations

As my friend and I talked, we realized that we’ve drifted away from this daily practice of celebrating. Life today often feels like a relentless pursuit of the next big goal, leaving little room to appreciate the small wins along the way. But what if we flipped the script? What if life became one big celebration?

If you already have a daily gratitude practice, you might be experiencing glimpses of this mindset. Gratitude allows us to pause and recognize the moments that make us smile. It highlights the things we’re proud of and helps us see the value in our everyday lives.

Why Small Wins Matter

Our goals may feel small or insignificant at the time, but they are anything but. For some, simply waking up and getting through the day is a cause for celebration. These moments deserve recognition because they remind us of our resilience and capacity for growth.

For me, baking a loaf of sourdough bread is a weekly celebration. My friends and I often text each other about our latest sourdough conquests, sharing photos and tips. It feels good to create something with my hands and even better to share it with others. These moments of connection and creativity are what make life rich and meaningful.

The Magic of Sharing Celebrations

Celebrating isn’t just about personal joy; it’s about letting others in on what makes you tick. When we share our victories, big or small, we’re being vulnerable. We’re saying, “This is who I am, and this is what brings me joy.” In doing so, we give others permission to do the same.

That’s where the magic happens. That’s humanity. We’re here to cheer for each other, to root each other on, and to celebrate each moment—big or small—together.

How to Start Celebrating More

  1. Acknowledge Your Wins: At the end of each day, write down three things you’re proud of or grateful for. These don’t have to be monumental—even small accomplishments count.
  2. Share Your Joy: Text a friend about something that made you smile or post about it on social media. Sharing your celebrations can inspire others to reflect on their own.
  3. Create Rituals: Turn ordinary moments into special ones. Brew your morning coffee with intention, light a candle during dinner, or take a moment to savor the sunset.
  4. Celebrate Others: Cheer on your friends and loved ones. Whether it’s a promotion, a new hobby, or a personal milestone, let them know you’re rooting for them.
  5. Practice Gratitude: Incorporate gratitude into your daily routine. Over time, you’ll start to see life through a celebratory lens.
